Alpine Racing: Negotiations Heat Up for Sergio Perez as Potential F1 Driver Swap Looms

In a whirlwind of developments for Alpine Racing, reports have surfaced indicating that negotiations are underway with Sergio Perez for a potential F1 2026 drive. Following the recent swap of Franco Colapinto for Jack Doohan, the team seems to have their sights set on the experienced Mexican driver.

The Race has revealed that preliminary discussions have commenced between Perez and Alpine, hinting at a possible collaboration in the upcoming Formula 1 season. With the sudden resignation of team boss Oli Oakes and the subsequent reshuffle that saw Doohan relegated to reserve status in favor of Colapinto, Alpine is clearly strategizing for the future.

Sources suggest that Perez’s representatives initiated contact with Alpine towards the end of 2024, leading to a meeting with Flavio Briatore, the executive advisor at Alpine. With the departure of Oakes, Briatore has assumed additional responsibilities within the team, including overseeing crucial decisions regarding driver line-ups.

Carlos Slim Domit, the influential backer of Perez and son of Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim Helu, reportedly held discussions about Perez’s prospects during the Miami Grand Prix. While Alpine appears keen on securing Perez, Cadillac F1 is also rumored to be in talks with the seasoned driver as they gear up to enter the F1 grid in 2026.

Perez, a six-time Grand Prix winner, expressed openness to exploring new opportunities in Formula 1, emphasizing the importance of finding a project that aligns with his ambitions and values. Having garnered success with Red Bull and Racing Point in recent years, Perez is evaluating his options carefully before committing to his next career move.

As the 2026 F1 season takes shape, the potential addition of Perez to Alpine’s roster could inject fresh energy and experience into the team. With multiple teams vying for his signature, Perez remains focused on selecting a project that resonates with his passion for the sport and offers a compelling vision for the future.

Stay tuned as negotiations unfold, paving the way for a potential driver swap that could reshape the dynamics of the upcoming Formula 1 season.
