Charles Leclerc, from Monaco, driving the Ferrari SF-24, and George Russell, from Great Britain, driving the Mercedes AMG F1 W15, were involved in a battle for position during the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 2, 2024. This was the first race of the Formula 1 World Championship held at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain.
Recently, George Russell shared how he executed a successful maneuver to overtake Charles Leclerc during the Bahrain Grand Prix. Russell had practiced this specific line on his reconnaissance laps before the race. In the early stages of the race, Russell was in third place, behind Leclerc, who was experiencing an issue with his front brakes, causing a significant temperature difference of 100 degrees.
Russell carefully observed Leclerc’s position and took advantage of his compromised situation and the second DRS zone to make his move. Skillfully, he maneuvered his Mercedes around the outside of the Ferrari at the right-hand turn of Turn 4. Russell attributed his success to his perception of a change in wind direction during his warm-up laps, which allowed him to brake later and deeper into the corner.
Reflecting on the battle with Leclerc, Russell expressed his pleasure with the experience. He mentioned that the wind shift and subsequent headwind at Turn 4 played a crucial role in his strategy. Russell had practiced the maneuver during his laps to the grid and was pleased to see Leclerc taking the inside line, as it allowed him to make the overtake around the outside.
Although drivers generally do not push to the limit during reconnaissance laps, Russell explained that he still used this time to test different trajectories and evaluate the level of grip available on the outside of the corners. He aimed to make the most of the prevailing conditions and exploit any advantages they offered. Russell acknowledged the significant changes in conditions on race day and appreciated the excitement it brought.
Mercedes opted for a race-focused setup, sacrificing some of their speed in a single lap in favor of better performance during long races. However, both Russell and his teammate Lewis Hamilton faced challenges with engine cooling. As a result, they had to manage engine temperatures, causing them to drop to fifth and seventh places, respectively.
Russell expressed his disappointment with the engine overheating issue, which arose shortly after he overtook Leclerc. The team had to reduce power to avoid further overheating, resulting in a loss of approximately four tenths of a second per lap. This setback caused them to lose positions, and Russell felt frustrated for not being able to show the true potential of his car. He emphasized the need to analyze and understand the factors that led to this error in judgment.
