The FIA is on the Brink of Chaos: Controversies, Resignations, and Power Struggles Rock Motorsport’s Governing Body

Amidst the high-stakes world of motorsport, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) is facing a whirlwind of scandals, resignations, and power struggles that threaten to shake its very core. As Mohammed Ben Sulayem gears up for re-election at the helm of the FIA, the organization finds itself engulfed in turmoil, with tensions running high and controversies plaguing its every move.

Since taking over from Jean Todt in 2021, Ben Sulayem has been embroiled in a series of controversies that have sent shockwaves through the world of motorsport. From allegations of race interference to clashes with drivers over regulations, the FIA has been at the center of a storm that shows no signs of abating.

One of the most notable incidents involved allegations of Ben Sulayem attempting to meddle with the outcome of the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, specifically targeting Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin. While an investigation ultimately cleared Ben Sulayem of any wrongdoing, the incident left a stain on the organization’s reputation.

The departure of chief executive officer Natalie Robyn further fueled speculation about the FIA’s internal workings, with questions raised about governance practices and financial transparency. Robyn’s critique of the organization’s structural challenges underscored a deep-seated issue that threatens to undermine the FIA’s credibility.

The FIA’s crackdown on swearing among drivers only added fuel to the fire, sparking backlash and protests from racing stars who felt unfairly targeted by the new regulations. The contentious issue highlighted the growing rift between the FIA and those it governs, further deepening the divide within the motorsport community.

Amidst the chaos, high-profile departures, including that of F1 race director Niels Wittich, have left the FIA reeling. Wittich’s sudden removal, coupled with tensions between senior stewards and Ben Sulayem, has exposed a power struggle at the heart of the organization, with repercussions that extend far beyond the racing track.

As the FIA grapples with internal strife and external scrutiny, the looming specter of the next presidential election adds a new layer of complexity to an already tumultuous situation. With rally driver Carlos Sainz Sr rumored to challenge Ben Sulayem for the top spot, the stage is set for a showdown that could shape the future of motorsport’s most influential governing body.

As the FIA navigates treacherous waters, the eyes of the racing world are fixed on its every move, waiting to see how the organization will weather the storm and emerge on the other side. In a sport where speed is king, it seems that the FIA is facing its most challenging race yet, one that will test its resilience, integrity, and ability to steer a steady course in turbulent times.
