Formula 1 Chaos: Verstappen Blasts FIA for Allowing Rivals to ‘Benefit’
In a whirlwind of controversy and accusations in the Formula 1 world, Jos Verstappen, father of Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen, has launched a scathing attack on the FIA for what he deems as allowing rival teams to benefit from unfair advantages.
Verstappen expressed his frustration at the FIA’s inaction regarding flexible front wings, with McLaren securing yet another impressive 1-2 finish in Miami. The Red Bull team has raised suspicions about McLaren’s car, questioning not only the front and rear wings but also the tires.
The spotlight has particularly been on McLaren’s tire management, with allegations of using water to cool the tires during pit stops. Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, retaliated by challenging the unnamed team, presumably Red Bull, to formally protest the MCL39 if they believe foul play is involved.
Amidst the tire controversy, Red Bull has also cast doubts on the flexibility of McLaren’s wings, both front and rear. While the FIA took action against rear wing flexibility early in the 2025 season, stricter tests for the front wing will only come into effect at the Spanish Grand Prix, leaving room for potential exploitation by rival teams.
Jos Verstappen expressed his dismay at the timing of the rule changes, questioning why the FIA allowed teams to benefit from certain design elements before implementing restrictions. The Red Bull camp is understandably concerned about the potential impact on the championship standings before the new directives take effect.
The FIA, in response to the uproar, announced phased additional front wing tests starting from the Spanish Grand Prix to ensure fairness and competitiveness among all teams. However, Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner, anticipates significant repercussions from the impending clampdown on wing flexibility, affecting all teams in varying degrees.
As the Formula 1 saga unfolds, the looming changes in technical regulations promise to shake up the current hierarchy and level the playing field, sparking anticipation and uncertainty among teams and fans alike.
