Oscar Piastri Disappointed with Qualifying Performance at Miami GP

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri expressed his disappointment with his qualifying performance at the Miami Grand Prix, attributing it to mistakes on both laps that hindered his chances of securing a better grid position. Despite high expectations for a strong qualifying showing, Piastri had to settle for fourth place on the grid for the race.

Both Piastri and his teammate Lando Norris were considered strong contenders for pole position at the Miami International Autodrome. However, neither driver was able to deliver flawless laps, allowing Max Verstappen to clinch his third pole of the 2025 season.

Reflecting on his performance, Piastri acknowledged, “It was just not the level of execution I needed to have in Q3. It’s never a great qualifying session when your best lap is the first lap of Q2.” He highlighted that mistakes at the beginning of his flying laps in Q3 prevented him from improving on his Q2 performance.

Piastri admitted to struggling at Turn 1 on both of his Q3 laps, resulting in a loss of crucial time. While he managed to recover some ground on his final lap, it was insufficient to move higher up the grid. Despite recognizing the pace of his car, Piastri lamented his inability to capitalize on it during the crucial qualifying session.

Both Piastri and Norris have faced challenges in pushing the limits of the McLaren MCL39 to its fullest potential. Piastri acknowledged the difficulty of extracting maximum performance from the car, stating, “There are definitely still some things with our car that we want to try and address, and driving it right on the limit is one of them.”

Looking ahead to the race, Piastri acknowledged the competitiveness of the field and the challenges of overtaking on a track where a one-stop strategy is expected. He expressed confidence in the car’s capabilities but recognized the importance of a strong qualifying performance in determining the race outcome.

As Piastri prepares to start fourth on the grid alongside Verstappen and Norris, he remains optimistic about his chances in the race. With the Australian driver aiming to make progress during the Grand Prix, all eyes will be on his performance as he navigates the demanding Miami circuit.
