Is Red Bull’s Future in F1 Doomed Without Max Verstappen?

Rumors of Max Verstappen’s potential departure from Red Bull have sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 world, with experts warning that his exit could spell disaster for the team’s future in the sport. Despite being locked into a contract until 2028, speculation is rife that the reigning world champion is considering a move away from the team he has called home since 2016. This uncertainty has reportedly caused “great concern” within the team, with Chief Advisor Helmut Marko confirming the existence of exit clauses in Verstappen’s contract.

Potential destinations for the 27-year-old superstar include Mercedes and Aston Martin, although Verstappen has remained tight-lipped about his intentions. Sky Sports commentator David Croft has raised alarm bells, suggesting that if Verstappen were to depart, Red Bull might even consider exiting the sport if they can’t compete for championships. Croft questioned the team’s commitment to F1 if they are not achieving victories and titles, considering the substantial financial investments they make in the sport.

Verstappen’s struggles on the track this season have further fueled concerns about Red Bull’s future. With just one win in five races, he finds himself behind early championship leader Oscar Piastri and McLaren’s Lando Norris in the standings. The departure of Sergio Perez in the off-season left Red Bull scrambling to find a suitable teammate for Verstappen, with Liam Lawson’s short-lived stint being replaced by Yuki Tsunoda. While Tsunoda has shown improvement, he has not been able to consistently challenge at the front of the grid, leaving Verstappen without the support he needs to reclaim the championship.

Red Bull’s hopes of reclaiming the title they lost to McLaren in 2024 are rapidly fading, with the reigning champions already holding a commanding 99-point lead. As the Miami Grand Prix approaches, all eyes will be on Red Bull and Verstappen to see if they can turn their season around and avoid a potential crisis that could see the team’s future in F1 called into question.
