Hyundai’s Epic Fail in Rally Canarias Unveiled

Hyundai hit rock bottom last week in Rally Islas Canarias, and the reasons behind their catastrophic performance are being dissected. The brutal honesty of Ott Tänak, who finished over three minutes off the winner on a dry Tarmac rally, shed light on the team’s struggles. “It’s probably the worst we have ever been as a team,” Tänak admitted.

From the very beginning of the event, cracks in Hyundai’s preparation started to show. Issues with balance and grip plagued the Hyundai drivers, with Tänak expressing his frustration, “It’s generally the balance…this is something we need to chase, you know, to make the tires last.” The lack of speed and balance continued throughout the rally, with Hyundai drivers losing significant time to their competitors, especially Toyota.

Hyundai’s technical director, François-Xavier Demaison, pointed out that the team had not done their homework properly before the event, leading to struggles in managing the tires with the new hard compound from Hankook. The team’s inability to adapt to the tire highlighted fundamental issues with the car that need addressing.

While Hyundai faltered, Toyota shone brightly, with Kalle Rovanperä dominating the rally in what was acknowledged as the best car. Second-placed Sébastien Ogier praised Toyota’s preparation and understanding of the tires, emphasizing the significant advantage they had over Hyundai. Even world championship leader Elfyn Evans admitted that Toyota had the best car on the track.

As Hyundai grapples with their shortcomings, Toyota revels in their success, with Deputy team principal Juha Kankkunen expressing confidence in their car’s compatibility with the new tires. The stark contrast between Hyundai’s struggles and Toyota’s triumph underscores the importance of meticulous preparation and adaptability in the world of rallying.
