Piloto da Fórmula 1 passará por operação cardíaca.

Heikki Kovalainen, a well-known figure in the world of motorsport with a long and successful career in Formula 1 and Super GT, is currently facing a significant health challenge. The Finnish driver, known for his competitive nature and resilience, was recently diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm, a serious condition that affects the arteries. Despite not showing any symptoms, Kovalainen made the difficult decision to prioritize his health over his racing career, at least for now.

At 42 years old, Kovalainen was preparing for a comeback in the Japanese Rally Championship for the 2024 season. He had plans to join the AICELLO rally team and compete alongside co-driver Sae Kitagawa. However, his preparations were abruptly halted when it was announced that Katsuhiko Taguchi would take Kovalainen’s place in the first event of the season, the Mikana Rally, scheduled for February 16. This unexpected turn of events came after a routine medical examination raised concerns about Kovalainen’s heart health, leading to further investigations.

The diagnosis of an ascending aortic aneurysm, which refers to a bulge in the aorta that poses a risk of rupture due to weakening of the blood vessel walls, requires immediate and significant medical intervention. In a candid statement, Kovalainen revealed: “I recently received the diagnosis of an ascending aortic aneurysm during a medical check-up. As a result, I was advised not to participate in rallies due to the increased risk of aortic rupture. Although I have no symptoms and feel well, we are currently working on a plan to address this issue. At the moment, open-heart surgery seems to be the most favorable solution, and we are preparing for it. Our goal is to undergo the operation and start the recovery process as soon as possible. Ultimately, I intend to make a comeback in the Japanese Rally Championship with the Rally Team AICELLO. Initially, I planned to participate in rallies until the end of January, but after careful consideration with my medical team, I decided to prioritize resolving this issue. I apologize to our team partners and fans for this setback and sincerely appreciate all the encouragement and support I have received.”

Kovalainen’s Formula 1 career is marked by significant achievements, including a victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2008 while with McLaren. Throughout his 111 starts in the Grand Prix, he achieved a total of 4 podiums and accumulated 105 points in the championship. As he prepares for surgery in Finland, the motorsport community is united in support of Kovalainen, hoping for his full recovery and eventual return to racing.
