Audi ready to finalize the acquisition of Sauber Formula 1.

Audi pronta para finalizar a aquisição da Sauber Formula 1.

In the realm of sensationalist journalism, there are reports that Audi, a prominent automotive brand, has officially registered as a Formula 1 engine manufacturer for future regulations in 2026. This development took place during the practice day of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa Francorchamps on August 26, 2022.

Rumors are circulating that Audi may be reconsidering its majority stake in the acquisition of Sauber’s Formula 1 operation. However, reports now indicate that Audi is on the verge of finalizing the procedures related to this acquisition.

Audi initially announced its foray into Formula 1 in the summer of 2022. Later that year, it became evident that Sauber would serve as the base for Audi’s factory team from 2026. The process began when Audi acquired 25% of the Hinwil-based team before the 2023 season.

According to reliable sources such as Bloomberg and Bild, it is understood that Audi will soon conclude its agreement with Sauber’s owner, Finn Rausing. Initially, it was believed that Audi would acquire 75% of the team, but there are now reports suggesting it could be a complete acquisition.

As part of this acquisition, Oliver Hoffmann, a member of Audi’s board, will assume the role of Sauber’s Director. Andreas Seidl, the current CEO, will report to Hoffmann. It is worth noting that Hoffmann played a significant role in the early stages of Audi’s Formula 1 project. There have been recent speculations that he could be leaving the German automotive empire due to a decline in car sales. However, both Audi and Sauber have remained steadfast in their commitment to the project.

In December of the previous year, CEO Gernot Dollner stated that there was a definitive decision from the boards of directors and supervisory boards of Audi and Volkswagen for Audi to enter Formula 1 in 2026. Alessandro Alunni Bravi, representative of the Sauber team, also stated that the project was progressing according to the agreed schedule and governance among the shareholders.

The latest development regarding the imminent acquisition of Sauber by Audi indicates that Seidl met with the team in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to inform them that the acquisition is reaching its final stage. Meanwhile, Sauber will operate under the name Stake F1 Team in the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

In preparation for its entry into Formula 1, Audi has reduced its involvement in various motorsport projects. This includes stepping away from Formula E, factory-backed sports car racing, and most recently, its Dakar off-road program, despite winning the last edition of the off-road endurance race with Carlos Sainz Sr. Audi is currently focused on developing an original power unit for its debut in 2026 and plans to conduct tests with the developing engine next year.
