Shocking: McLaren Exit Formula E for Le Mans Glory – CEO Drops Bombshell at Jeddah

McLaren Shock the Racing World with Abrupt Exit from Formula E!

In a startling turn of events, McLaren, the reigning F1 Constructors’ Champions, have reportedly made the decision to pull out of the all-electric Formula E category. This unexpected move comes hot on the heels of their recent announcement to join the World Endurance Championship, including the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours race, starting in 2027.

Having been a notable presence in Formula E since rebranding the former Mercedes team for the 2022/23 season, McLaren’s decision to withdraw has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community. Despite their partnership with Saudi Arabian firm NEOM, McLaren’s stint in Formula E has been marred by limited success, clinching just one victory in the past three seasons.

According to a report by The Race, McLaren’s chief executive Zak Brown informed team principal Ian James of the manufacturer’s plan to end their support of the Formula E team ahead of the 2026/27 season. The bombshell revelation was said to have occurred during the Jeddah E-Prix in February, adding a layer of intrigue to the already intense season.

As McLaren prepares to bid adieu to Formula E, James now faces the daunting task of securing new commercial, naming, and manufacturer partners for the upcoming 2026/27 season, which will coincide with Formula E’s anticipated ‘Gen4’ era featuring innovative new cars.

This seismic development from McLaren comes shortly after the team’s announcement of their entry into the World Endurance Championship in 2027. With aspirations to conquer motorsport’s prestigious triple crown — the Monaco Grand Prix, Le Mans, and the Indianapolis 500 — in the same year, McLaren is gearing up for a monumental return to endurance racing.

In a bold statement regarding McLaren’s WEC entry, Brown expressed the team’s eagerness to dominate the Hypercar class and recapture the glory of their Le Mans victory in 1995. The team’s ambitious goal of winning the triple crown in a single year demonstrates their unwavering commitment to excellence and cementing their legacy in motorsport history.

As the racing world braces for McLaren’s grand reentry into endurance racing, fans and competitors alike await further details on the team’s WEC plans, with speculations swirling around the potential leadership of outgoing Jaguar Formula E team principal James Barclay. Stay tuned for more updates on McLaren’s exhilarating journey back to the pinnacle of motorsport!
