Former FIA Steward Slams Max Verstappen’s Post-Race Behavior as Unprofessional and Disrespectful

Johnny Herbert Reveals FIA’s ‘Controlling’ and ‘Heavy-Handed’ Approach in First Interview Post Dismissal

Former FIA steward Johnny Herbert has launched a scathing attack on Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen, branding the Dutch driver as ‘unprofessional’ and ‘disrespectful’ following his behavior at the recent Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Verstappen, who finished second in the race after receiving a five-second penalty for gaining an advantage by leaving the track, was criticized by Herbert for his lack of sportsmanship on the podium.

Herbert, who was removed from his role as an FIA steward before the 2025 season, did not hold back in his assessment of Verstappen’s actions, stating, “It comes across as unprofessional and disrespectful, from a four-time world champion. You have to be gracious in defeat sometimes.”

The incident in question involved Verstappen and Oscar Piastri at Turn 1 on the first lap, with Piastri ultimately going on to win the race while Verstappen had to settle for second place. Despite the penalty and the controversy surrounding it, Verstappen chose to remain tight-lipped about the issue during post-race interviews, citing the overly sensitive nature of the current world.

Herbert also took aim at Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, suggesting that both he and Verstappen should have accepted the penalty and shown better sportsmanship by acknowledging the mistake. Horner had attempted to argue against the penalty by presenting photographic evidence, but Herbert dismissed this, emphasizing the importance of admitting when one is wrong in the world of Formula 1.

The fallout from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix continues to reverberate through the F1 world, with Verstappen and Red Bull facing criticism for their handling of the penalty decision. As the championship battle heats up, tensions are running high, and every misstep is being scrutinized under the spotlight of the global stage.

In a sport where precision, skill, and sportsmanship are paramount, the actions of Verstappen and his team have raised questions about the true spirit of competition in Formula 1. As the season progresses towards its climax, all eyes will be on how the contenders navigate the challenges both on and off the track, and whether they can uphold the integrity and honor of the sport amidst the intense pressure of the championship battle.
