In a groundbreaking move that will shake up the world of Formula 1, the FIA has given the green light to GM Performance Power Units LLC to become the official power unit supplier starting in 2029. This approval signals a major shift in the dynamics of the sport, with the Cadillac Formula 1 Team set to utilize Ferrari engines until the GM power units are ready for action.

The President of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, hailed GM’s entry into the realm of Formula 1 as a testament to the sport’s global expansion and its unwavering commitment to innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity. With plans already underway for the development of the F1 engine at a new facility near GM’s Technical Center in Charlotte by 2026, the stage is set for a new era in motorsport.

Speaking on the significance of this milestone, Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed, “Welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC as an approved power unit supplier for the Championship from 2029 marks another step in Formula 1’s global expansion and underscores the growing interest from world-class automakers like General Motors. Their dedication to innovation, sustainability, and competition is fully aligned with the FIA’s vision for the future of our sport.”

Furthermore, the appointment of industry veteran Russ O’Blenes as the CEO of GM Performance Power Units LLC further solidifies the brand’s commitment to delivering an American-made F1 power unit that will undoubtedly make waves on the grid.

With the development and testing of the F1 engine prototype well underway, and plans in motion for a dedicated Performance Power Units LLC facility in Charlotte, the anticipation for GM’s foray into Formula 1 is reaching fever pitch. This move not only signifies a new chapter in the sport but also paves the way for increased accessibility and diversity within the world of motorsport.

As the countdown to 2029 begins, all eyes are on GM as they gear up to revolutionize Formula 1 with their cutting-edge power units. The future of racing has never looked more electrifying.
