General Motors to Revolutionize Formula 1 as Official Engine Supplier in 2029 Season

In a groundbreaking move, General Motors has been given the green light by the FIA to become a Formula 1 engine supplier for the 2029 season. The automotive behemoth will introduce the Cadillac F1 team starting in 2026, paving the way for the utilization of American-manufactured power units from 2029 onwards. This significant development comes hot on the heels of the FIA’s official approval of GM Performance Power Units LLC as a power unit supplier, solidifying General Motors’ prominent role in the future of F1.

Initially, the Cadillac team will rely on Ferrari engines for the first three seasons before transitioning to GM’s own power units in 2029. Russ O’Blenes, the CEO of GM Performance Power Units LLC, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “With this approval from the FIA, we will continue to accelerate our efforts to bring an American-built F1 power unit to the grid.”

The engines are being meticulously crafted by a new collaboration between General Motors and TWG Motorsports, the parent company of Andretti Global. This partnership will see the establishment of a dedicated engine development facility near GM’s Charlotte Technical Center in North Carolina next year, further underlining the commitment to innovation and excellence in F1.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem lauded the approval of GM Performance Power Units LLC as a pivotal moment in Formula 1’s global expansion, emphasizing the alignment of General Motors’ values with the FIA’s vision for the sport’s future. This move not only signifies a new chapter for General Motors but also heralds a more inclusive and diverse era for motorsport worldwide.

General Motors now joins the ranks of prestigious automotive manufacturers involved in Formula 1 engine supply, setting the stage for a thrilling competition against industry giants like Ferrari, Mercedes, Audi, and Red Bull, which has forged a partnership with Ford for its F1 engine venture.

As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, General Motors’ foray into Formula 1 marks a significant milestone in the sport’s history, promising fans a new era of innovation, competition, and American excellence on the track.
