Mercedes Suffers Devastating Setback at Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with “Worst Performance of the Season”
The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix turned into a nightmare for Mercedes as they experienced what Toto Wolff described as the “worst performance of the year so far.” The Silver Arrows, with George Russell finishing fifth and Andrea Kimi Antonelli in sixth, struggled to keep up with their competitors McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari in Jeddah.
Wolff expressed his frustration at the lack of pace from Mercedes, especially considering their strong start to the 2025 Formula 1 season where they entered the grand prix second in the championship standings. The team was left perplexed by the sudden drop in performance, with Wolff stating, “It was clearly our worst performance of the year so far. The pace just dropped away with blistering, overheating tyres and so far we haven’t got an explanation.”
Despite a promising qualifying session that saw Russell start in third place, Mercedes could not maintain their speed during the race. Russell, echoing Wolff’s sentiments, struggled to manage his Pirelli tyres, leading to a significant drop in performance towards the end of the race. He admitted, “I was dropping a second a lap in the last 15 laps, but to be fair, we just didn’t have the pace.”
The issues faced by Mercedes were not solely due to track temperatures but also a result of generating excessive heat in the tyres compared to their rivals. Russell highlighted the challenges, stating, “We had blistering on the front, blistering on the rear, and then suddenly you just have no grip from the tyre at all.”
This disappointing outcome comes after a series of positive results for Russell at the start of the 2025 season, including three podium finishes in the opening four races. The team now faces the task of understanding the shift in performance from previous races, with Russell emphasizing the need to improve quickly to remain competitive.
The setback in Jeddah serves as a wake-up call for Mercedes, prompting them to address the issues that led to their “worst performance of the season.” As the competition heats up in the 2025 Formula 1 season, Mercedes must regroup and strategize to bounce back stronger in the upcoming races.
