Mercedes in Crisis: George Russell’s Tyres Plunge “Off a Cliff” in Disastrous Performance

Mercedes is reeling from what Toto Wolff describes as the “worst performance of the year so far” at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The team’s frustration was palpable as they finished fifth with George Russell and sixth with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, trailing behind McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari in Jeddah.

Wolff expressed bewilderment over the lack of pace, especially considering Mercedes’ strong start to the 2025 Formula 1 season, entering the race as the second in the championship standings. “It was clearly our worst performance of the year so far,” Wolff stated. “The pace just dropped away with blistering, overheating tyres, and so far we haven’t got an explanation.”

Despite a promising qualifying that saw Russell starting in third place, the race proved to be a major letdown for Mercedes. “You manage your expectations being the second quickest – and even that is not obviously what we would wish to achieve – and then you see the race panning out like it did. It just adds to the frustration of the situation,” Wolff lamented.

Russell echoed Wolff’s sentiments, citing struggles with managing his Pirelli tyres. “They were massively overheating,” he explained. The British driver described how he could not keep up with Max Verstappen, ultimately falling behind due to tyre degradation. “We know that it’s a bit of a weakness of our car at the moment,” Russell admitted, highlighting the urgency to address the issue promptly.

The disappointing performance in Jeddah comes after a series of strong showings by Russell at the start of the season, including three podium finishes in the first four races. The contrast between the success in Bahrain and the struggle in Saudi Arabia has left the team searching for answers.

As Mercedes grapples with this setback, the pressure is on to rectify the tyre issues and bounce back stronger in the upcoming races. Stay tuned for more updates on Mercedes’ quest for redemption in the Formula 1 circuit.
