In a jaw-dropping revelation on the race track, Lando Norris’s daring corner-cutting maneuver at Turns 1 and 2 during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix practice session not only raised eyebrows but also shed light on a fascinating technique employed by the McLaren team.

During FP2 in Jeddah, Norris clocked two blistering times, securing the top spot. His second time of 1m28.267s, slightly faster than his initial 1m28.340s, was achieved through a risky move of carrying excessive speed into the first corner, veering off onto the run-off area before continuing his lap. While such a move would be deemed illegal and deleted in qualifying, it remained valid during practice, offering a glimpse into McLaren’s unconventional approach.

The audacious driving style of Norris and his teammate Oscar Piastri was starkly different from their competitors, particularly noticeable in their aggressive entry speeds and use of apex kerbs at Turns 1 and 2. This distinctive technique set them apart from the likes of Verstappen, Leclerc, and Russell, showcasing a strategic trade-off between entry and exit speeds.

McLaren’s weaker performance in low-speed corners prompted a unique approach by the drivers, focusing on maximizing speed at Turn 1 to offset potential losses at Turn 2. This tactical adjustment hinted at a possible solution to their performance struggles, especially evident in the negligible time difference against Verstappen and the advantage gained over Russell and Leclerc.

The controversial corner-cutting incident by Norris not only underscored the team’s experimental mindset during practice but also hinted at a subtle rivalry between the two drivers. Piastri’s aggressive braking contrasted with Norris’s more conservative style, revealing a fascinating dynamic within the McLaren duo.

As the competition heats up heading into qualifying, all eyes will be on McLaren to see if they can maintain their innovative approach and overcome their weaknesses on the track. The strategic evolution within the team promises an exhilarating showdown on race day, with Norris and Piastri poised to showcase their distinct driving prowess in pursuit of victory.
