BMW’s Shocking GTP Overhaul: Rahal Letterman Lanigan to be Replaced for 2026

BMW Revamping GTP Program for 2026 Season

In a bold move that is set to shake up the motorsport world, German automaker BMW is contemplating a major overhaul of its IMSA GTP program for the upcoming 2026 season. Insider sources have revealed that Rahal Letterman Lanigan (RLL), BMW’s current service provider, may face replacement by another prestigious team as part of BMW’s strategic restructuring.

RLL has been a stalwart representative of BMW since 2009, amassing an impressive 24 race victories and multiple championships across different categories. However, since transitioning to the top class with the M Hybrid V8 in 2023, RLL has faced challenges in maintaining a competitive edge on the track. Despite securing wins at notable circuits like Watkins Glen and Indianapolis, the team has struggled to convert pole positions into victories in the 2025 season.

Reports suggest that BMW has shortlisted three potential teams to take over from RLL, with Chip Ganassi Racing and Pratt Miller Motorsports emerging as frontrunners. While Chip Ganassi Racing boasts a strong track record in motorsport, Pratt Miller Motorsports, known for its association with Corvette, is also a formidable contender vying for the coveted role.

Meanwhile, RLL is reportedly still engaged in discussions with BMW to retain its contract, but the decision ultimately lies in BMW’s hands. Should BMW opt for a change, RLL would have just seven races remaining with the M Hybrid V8, including key Endurance Cup rounds at Watkins Glen, Indianapolis, and Road Atlanta.

The timing of BMW’s evaluation coincides with RLL’s recent appointment of Jay Frye as its new president, following a leadership change earlier in the year. Frye, a seasoned figure in motorsport, brings a fresh perspective to the team as they navigate potential transitions in the program.

The automotive industry has witnessed a series of significant shifts in the Hypercar and GTP categories over the past year, with notable changes in partnerships and service providers. From Cadillac’s parting with Chip Ganassi Racing to Lamborghini’s program restructuring, the landscape of motorsport is evolving rapidly, setting the stage for intense competition and innovation.

As BMW gears up to make a pivotal decision regarding its GTP program, the motorsport community is abuzz with anticipation, awaiting an announcement that could reshape the dynamics of IMSA racing. With high stakes and fierce competition on the horizon, all eyes are on BMW as it prepares to usher in a new era of performance and excellence on the track.
