Domenicali: Formula 1 serves as a testing ground for new technologies.

Formula 1’s Iconic Imola Circuit at Risk of Being Axed from Calendar

The iconic Imola Circuit, home to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, faces the looming threat of being dropped from the Formula 1 calendar, according to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

Imola, which made a comeback to F1 in 2020 after a 14-year absence, is currently in the final year of its contract and will hold the seventh round on May 18. With F1’s calendar expanding to a record 24 races in 2025, competition for slots is fierce, potentially leaving Imola on the chopping block.

Domenicali, a native of Imola, expressed concerns about the future of the circuit, acknowledging the challenges of accommodating two races in the same country. He emphasized the growing global interest in F1, hinting at the difficulty of maintaining multiple races within Italy.

The circuit, with its rich history marred by triumph and tragedy, has been a significant venue in F1. From standing in for Monza in the 1980 Italian Grand Prix to becoming the host of the San Marino Grand Prix, Imola has witnessed memorable moments like the intense duel between Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher in 2005.

Despite regaining its Grade 1 status in 2011, Imola faced a long absence from F1 until its revival in the COVID-affected 2020 season. However, with countries like the USA securing multiple rounds and new contenders like Thailand and South Africa vying for slots, Imola’s future hangs in the balance.

As the motorsport world eagerly awaits the fate of the legendary Imola Circuit, the potential exclusion of this historic track would mark a significant shift in the F1 landscape, leaving fans and enthusiasts on edge about what lies ahead in the ever-evolving world of Formula 1.
