Mercedes F1 Team Faces Investigation Over Controversial Pitlane Incident in Bahrain Grand Prix

In a shocking turn of events at the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Mercedes F1 team, along with drivers George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, has been summoned by the race stewards for a contentious incident during Q2 qualifying.

The chaos unfolded when Esteban Ocon’s crash led to a temporary halt in the qualifying session, prompting uncertainty around the restart time. Despite the lack of an official declaration, Mercedes took matters into their own hands, sending both drivers into the fast lane of the pitlane prematurely. This move raised eyebrows, with Nico Hulkenberg even describing it as “dodgy” as he was advised to stay put in the garage.

The stewards have summoned Russell and Antonelli for an “alleged breach of Article 12.2.1 i) of the International Sporting Code and noncompliance with Race Director’s Event Note.” This unprecedented situation has left team principal Toto Wolff bewildered, expressing uncertainty about the potential repercussions. Wolff admitted fault, stating, “It was our mistake that we jumped the gun here, but we’ll see what happens.”

Despite the controversy, Russell managed to secure a front-row position on the provisional grid, alongside Oscar Piastri. Antonelli also impressed with a fourth-place finish. Charles Leclerc, in a surprising twist, claimed the third spot on the grid for Ferrari.

The outcome of this investigation could have far-reaching consequences for Mercedes and its drivers. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
