In a shocking turn of events, Max Verstappen from Red Bull has declared that his team is “just too slow” at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The team is now facing the imminent threat of a significant defeat at the hands of their Formula 1 rival, McLaren.

During the second practice session, Verstappen found himself in eighth place, trailing over eight tenths behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who set the pace. This disappointing performance continues a concerning trend for Red Bull this season, as they have struggled to break into the top six in FP2 sessions.

Verstappen expressed his frustration, stating, “Just too slow basically every lap.” He elaborated on the team’s challenges, highlighting their struggle with grip and overall performance. Despite efforts to focus on soft-tyre running during Friday’s session, Red Bull still faced a significant gap to the McLaren cars.

Analysis of GPS data reveals a clear weakness in Red Bull’s RB21 compared to McLaren, especially in terms of tyre management. The McLaren consistently outperformed the Red Bull in crucial sectors, indicating a potential advantage over a race distance.

McLaren, on the other hand, displayed a solid performance during Friday’s practice. Piastri and Norris both acknowledged the team’s promising pace, with Norris emphasizing the need to adapt quickly due to the challenging conditions in Bahrain.

Norris dismissed suggestions that McLaren’s performance was solely due to engine modes, highlighting the team’s genuine progress and competitive edge. With McLaren seemingly ahead of the competition, the upcoming race promises to be a thrilling battle between the teams.

As Red Bull scrambles to address their speed issues and McLaren asserts its dominance, the Bahrain Grand Prix is shaping up to be a showdown of epic proportions in the world of Formula 1.
