Formula 1 driver Kimi Antonelli has experienced a rollercoaster of emotions during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend, going from feeling “lost” and having “zero confidence” in practice sessions to making a significant leap forward during qualifying.

Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, expressed his struggles during practice, where he found it challenging to make improvements and lacked confidence in the performance of his W16 car. However, his fortunes changed during qualifying, where he managed to secure a sixth-place starting position on the grid for the race.

Reflecting on his performance, Antonelli admitted to Sky Sports, “I’m not going to lie – in free practice, I was lost and had zero confidence, mainly because I was really struggling to improve.” Despite the improvement in qualifying, Antonelli emphasized the need to be more proactive in practice sessions to arrive better prepared for future races.

Looking ahead to the race day with the possibility of rain, Antonelli shared his thoughts, saying, “I mean, I wouldn’t mind if it would rain tomorrow, even for the first part of the race.”

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen clinched pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix, with Lando Norris alongside him on the front row. Antonelli’s teammate George Russell will start from fifth on the grid, expressing disappointment in his performance but remaining optimistic about the race day possibilities.

With changeable weather conditions forecasted for the race, both Antonelli and Russell are gearing up for an unpredictable and potentially thrilling Grand Prix in Japan.
