Yuki Tsunoda Given Green Light to Challenge Verstappen at Red Bull Racing
In a bold move that could shake up the F1 2025 season, Yuki Tsunoda has been granted a surprising promise by Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner. Tsunoda revealed that he has been assured by Horner that team orders will not always prioritize Max Verstappen, igniting speculation and excitement ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.
After only two races in the 2025 season, Tsunoda has been swiftly promoted to Red Bull Racing, replacing Liam Lawson who struggled to adjust from the Racing Bulls junior team. This unexpected promotion makes Tsunoda Verstappen’s third teammate in just four races, emphasizing the team’s commitment to finding the right match for the Dutch driver.
Despite Verstappen’s undeniable status as the lead driver at Red Bull, with four consecutive World Championships under his belt since 2021, Tsunoda has been given the go-ahead to challenge him in certain circumstances. In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Tsunoda shared, “In some races I can help with the strategy but he also promised me in some situations that if I’m able to be in front of Max that he wouldn’t necessarily ask me to swap positions and make Max win.”
Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko also praised Tsunoda’s performance in the team’s simulator, dispelling doubts about the young driver’s abilities. Marko highlighted Tsunoda’s technical feedback and overall progress, indicating that he is ready to take on the challenge at Red Bull Racing.
