Honda Racing Corporation president, Koji Watanabe, has made it clear that the fate of Yuki Tsunoda’s Formula 1 career with Red Bull is solely in the hands of the young Japanese driver. Amidst Honda’s new venture with Aston Martin in the F1 world championship, Tsunoda has received a significant promotion to Red Bull’s main team for the Japanese Grand Prix.

The decision to swap Tsunoda with Liam Lawson in the Red Bull lineup came after Lawson’s lackluster performance in the opening races of the season. Despite initial uncertainties about Tsunoda’s future with the Austrian team, he now has the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities and potentially challenge teammate Max Verstappen.

As Honda gears up for a new partnership with Aston Martin starting in 2026, Watanabe emphasized that Honda will not interfere with Tsunoda’s position at Red Bull. The 24-year-old driver, a product of Honda’s young driver program, must continue to prove himself based on his performance and determination.

Watanabe stated, “He earned his promotion to Red Bull based on his performance, so he must continue proving himself to remain there in the coming years. The most important thing is his own will – since he wants to continue with Red Bull, we have no reason to interfere.”

Furthermore, Watanabe clarified that Honda had no involvement in the decision-making process that led to the driver swap between Tsunoda and Lawson. He emphasized the importance of Red Bull selecting the best driver for their team and highlighted the ongoing communication between Honda and Red Bull regarding various matters, including driver personnel and trackside support structures.

Tsunoda’s debut race weekend with Red Bull coincides with the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, adding extra significance and pressure to the event. Tsunoda acknowledged the unique challenges and pressures he faces but expressed his determination to make the most of the opportunity.

“This is the ultimate situation. Given the seat swap, there’s naturally pressure from Red Bull, and Honda also has strong expectations for their home grand prix. This is a rare and unique moment where multiple challenges and pressures are coming together, and I think it’s the best kind of situation. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to experience something like this again, so I just want to enjoy it,” Tsunoda commented.

With Honda’s focus shifting towards its collaboration with Aston Martin, all eyes are on Tsunoda as he embarks on this crucial phase of his career with Red Bull. The young driver’s performance and determination will be key in shaping his future in the competitive world of Formula 1.
