Toyota Team Principal Jari-Matti Latvala has come forward to take full responsibility for Takamoto Katsuta’s recent crash at the Safari Rally Kenya. The incident occurred during the final stage of the rally when Katsuta, following team orders to push for better performance, lost control of his Toyota and rolled off the track, ultimately costing him a fourth-place finish.

Despite the unfortunate turn of events, Latvala emphasized that Katsuta cannot be blamed for the crash as he was given the green light by the team to push in the final stage. The decision was part of a strategic move to secure crucial points, which unfortunately did not pan out as expected.

Reflecting on Katsuta’s overall performance at the event, Latvala acknowledged that it was not a bad outing for the Japanese driver. With Katsuta currently standing in seventh place in the world championship standings, his contribution to Toyota’s points tally has been significant, particularly with a second-place finish at Rally Sweden.

However, the team’s lead over Hyundai has been slightly narrowed after losing 22 points in Kenya, despite still maintaining a 26-point advantage overall.

The incident serves as a reminder of the high stakes and calculated risks involved in competitive rallying, where split-second decisions can make a significant impact on the final standings. As Toyota evaluates the aftermath of Katsuta’s crash, the team remains focused on regaining momentum and securing valuable points in the upcoming events of the championship season.
