Denny Hamlin Dominates Martinsville to Capture First Victory of 2025 NASCAR Season

In an unforgettable performance, Denny Hamlin stormed to victory in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out 400 at Martinsville Speedway, dominating the race from start to finish. Hamlin, a Virginia native, led 274 of the 400 laps, the most he’s led in any race since the introduction of the Next Gen car, making this victory even more special. This win also marks his 55th career Cup Series victory, tying him with NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace on the all-time wins list.

Hamlin’s triumph at Martinsville is significant for several reasons. Not only did it mark his first win of the 2025 season, but it also ended a decade-long drought at the track. His most recent victory at Martinsville came in the spring of 2015, making this win particularly sweet for the veteran driver. This was Hamlin’s sixth career victory at Martinsville, solidifying his legacy at the short track.

A Strong Performance for Joe Gibbs Racing

Hamlin’s victory was a statement for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), with teammate Christopher Bell finishing second after starting from pole position in the No. 20 Toyota. Bell kept Hamlin within reach but ultimately could not challenge him for the win. The two JGR teammates proved to be the class of the field, with Bell securing a strong result in the top 5.

The Rest of the Top 5: A Competitive Field

Behind the JGR duo, Bubba Wallace came home in third place for 23XI Racing, while Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson rounded out the top five, representing Hendrick Motorsports with Chevrolet. Wallace’s third-place finish marked another strong outing for his team, continuing a solid season for the 23XI Racing driver.

William Byron Struggles at Martinsville

While the race saw dominant performances from Hamlin and his teammates, William Byron, the current series points leader, struggled throughout the race in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Byron failed to lead a single lap for the first time in the 2025 season, ultimately finishing a disappointing 22nd after battling handling issues all afternoon. His performance at Martinsville was a rare misstep in what has otherwise been an excellent season.

Joey Logano’s Recovery and Stage Win

Defending series champion Joey Logano had a turbulent race, recovering from a late spin to finish ninth. He was able to secure his first top 10 of the season after winning Stage 1, a promising result given the setbacks. Logano’s ability to rebound shows the competitive nature of the season, where even the most seasoned drivers like him will have to fight for every position.

Looking Ahead to Darlington Raceway

The Cup Series now heads to Darlington Raceway for the Goodyear 400 next Sunday as part of NASCAR Throwback Weekend. The race will be an exciting continuation of the 2025 season, with Brad Keselowski, the defending winner of the event, looking to defend his crown. The action will be broadcast at 3 p.m. ET on FS1 and available on MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

With Hamlin’s dominating victory at Martinsville, fans are excited to see if he can continue his strong form in the coming races, while competitors like Byron and Logano will be eager to bounce back at Darlington.
