Produção do Smart Fortwo chegou ao fim

Mercedes-Benz ended production of the Smart ForTwo in March 2024, after 25 years of production. However, the small electric model may make a comeback by the end of the decade.

This was stated by Smart’s European CEO, Dirk Adelmann, who announced in an interview with the British “Auto Express” that the brand is studying the feasibility of bringing back the ForTwo.

Dirk Adelmann also revealed that the future ForTwo will define segment A. “Segment A is very interesting for us because it is growing“.

Although everything points to the future ForTwo having a compact image and a spacious interior, Smart’s European CEO acknowledged that the new model “will be significantly smaller in size than the #1 and #3, but it will definitely be a Smart. That doesn’t mean it will have a retro image; Smart generally does not follow a retro philosophy; we are looking at what comes next”, said Adelmann.

It is worth noting that the well-known two-seater was initially designed as an electric vehicle in the 1990s, but later saw its range expand with a combustion engine model, with millions of units built over time.

In 2019, Mercedes formed a joint venture with the Chinese company Geely to manage Smart. That same year, the brand ceased production of combustion engine models, and Smart became the first European electric car brand.
