Mercedes’ Toto Wolff Applauds George Russell and Kimi Antonelli’s Performance at 2025 Chinese GP

2025 Australian Grand Prix, Thursday - Giacomo Crapanzano

Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff celebrated a triumphant performance from his drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix. Russell’s stellar performance landed him a third-place finish, while Antonelli, initially placed eighth, ascended to sixth place following disqualifications from the Ferrari team.

The Shanghai International Circuit race was not without its surprises, notably Antonelli securing the Driver of the Day title, despite finishing in the position he started. Public vote left fans puzzled, however, Wolff praised the young Italian driver’s grit and resilience, especially after dealing with early floor damage.

Meanwhile, Russell, who had secured the second position during qualifying, saw a reversal in his fortune during the race. However, the undeniable speed of the McLaren’s and a subsequent late brake issue for Lando Norris, could have seen Russell reclaiming his second position, had the race been extended by a lap. Despite the setback, Wolff hailed Russell as ‘faultless’ for his performance during the race.

Post-Lewis Hamilton era, Russell has undoubtedly emerged as the lead driver for Mercedes, with Antonelli, a rookie, carving his path in the sport. The onus is on Russell, the former Williams man, to consistently deliver top performances and guide the team. Despite the early season predictions not favouring Mercedes as the fastest car, Russell’s back-to-back podium finishes in two consecutive races have left a positive impression on Wolff, as reflected in a post-race press release by Mercedes.

Wolff applauded Russell’s performance, stating that “A podium felt like the realistic best-case scenario for us ahead of the race, and that is what we were able to achieve. George was faultless today, extracted the maximum from the car and that was a 10 out of 10 drive. His performance this season has been tremendous, exactly as we anticipated from the senior driver.”

Antonelli, however, faced a different set of challenges during the race, as he grappled with severe damage from the first lap, which necessitated a preservation strategy rather than a combative approach. Despite his difficulties, Antonelli remained focused on the race, delivering a commendable eighth-place finish, a move which earned Wolff’s praise.

Discussing the car’s pace and overall performance in the early part of the season, Wolff remained optimistic. “It’s been a promising start to the new season. Our ambition is to win, but we don’t feel entitled to victory. While our car isn’t as fast as the McLaren at the moment, the team is striving hard to close that gap. Currently, we are extracting the maximum performance we can and standing second in the Constructors’ Championship, having secured two podiums in the first two races, is satisfactory.”

With such an encouraging start to the season, Mercedes seems set for a victorious journey in the 2025 F1 Championship, under the capable guidance of Wolff, and the exemplary performances of Russell and Antonelli.
