The 2025 Chinese Grand Prix qualifying session witnessed an adrenaline-pumping showdown on the Shanghai International Circuit. This anticipated event laid out a thrilling spectacle for Formula 1 enthusiasts, with surprising results and nail-biting finishes.

The second qualifying round, or Q2, saw Oscar Piastri of McLaren securing a commendable third position, followed closely by the formidable Racing Bulls team duo, Isack Hadjar and Yuki Tsunoda. However, the session ended on a sour note for a few big names. Haas’ Esteban Ocon, Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg, the Aston Martin pair of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, and Carlos Sainz of Williams were unable to make the cut.

The Q2 leaderboard was a reflection of the intense competition, with Max Verstappen of Red Bull trailing by a narrow +0.355, followed by Piastri at +0.413. The Racing Bulls team’s performance was noteworthy, with Hadjar and Tsunoda standing fourth and fifth at +0.466 and +0.473, respectively. The list continued with George Russell of Mercedes at +0.520, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari at +0.663, and Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari at +0.714. Rounding up the top ten were Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes at +0.803 and Alex Albon of Williams at +0.808.

The first qualifying round or Q1 was not devoid of action either. Lewis Hamilton, having left an impression in the Sprint, was off to a strong start in Q1. However, his early lead was soon overtaken by Piastri and shortly after, by Verstappen, who drove a stellar final sector, securing the top spot. Yuki Tsunoda, representing the Racing Bulls, maintained a strong third position, followed by George Russell of Mercedes. Verstappen, choosing to hold onto an extra set of soft tyres, remained in fifth position, deciding against a return.

The disappointment in Q1 was palpable at the bottom, as both Alpine drivers – Pierre Gasly in 16th and Jack Doohan in 18th – were eliminated early. They were separated by Haas’ Oliver Bearman in the 17th spot. Sauber’s Gabriel Bartoleto and Red Bull’s Liam Lawson, who had a particularly dismal qualifying session, finished in the 19th and 20th spots, respectively. Lawson’s qualifying performance has been less than stellar this season, as he failed to advance beyond the first part of qualifying in any of the sessions he participated in.

This qualifying session at the Shanghai International Circuit has set the stage for an exciting 2025 Chinese Grand Prix. F1 fans across the globe eagerly await the main event, anticipating more intense competition and high-octane action on the track.
