Max Verstappen, the Red Bull ace, has expressed jubilation over securing the second spot in the Sprint at the Chinese Grand Prix, despite narrowly missing out on pole position to Lewis Hamilton by a mere 0.018s. Verstappen’s delight stems from his belief that his team, Red Bull, shouldn’t have made it to the front row, a position much higher than his initial expectations.
Hamilton, in his second race weekend for Ferrari, clinched the Sprint pole, leaving Verstappen in a close second. This finish was a surprise to both drivers who expected the McLarens to lead based on Friday’s lap times. Verstappen’s satisfaction was evident as he said, “I am very happy. The lap was very good; it’s always very tough when you go from a medium to a soft to nail the lap with no references.”
Although Verstappen admitted that Red Bull’s performance wasn’t as strong as McLaren’s, he emphasized the lack of significant handling issues with his car. Instead, he pointed to a general lack of overall performance as the main challenge. Nevertheless, the result is seen as a morale booster for the team as they aim to minimize the impact on the championship standings at this early stage.
“We keep nailing the laps and we keep maximizing everything that we’ve got,” Verstappen asserted, acknowledging that the team needs to continue to do so, especially when they are struggling for pace.
Looking ahead, Verstappen anticipates a significant challenge from the McLaren duo, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, in the Sprint. However, he remains hopeful that the performance gap is small enough for him to contest for the top spot.
“They looked very fast up until that last run, so I think it will be very hard to keep them behind,” Verstappen confessed. “But hopefully it will be fun; hopefully we are all… I wouldn’t say close but at least that we can race a bit, that would be nice for me.”
