Carson Hocevar: The Next Superstar in NASCAR, Says Kenny Wallace After Chaotic Atlanta Race

Carson Hocevar, the bold young NASCAR racer, is known for his unconventional moves on the track. His aggressive style, ranging from causing a wreck in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship in 2023 to crashing into Harrison Burton in Nashville, is as notorious as it is inventive. However, it’s not just his knack for chaos that sets Hocevar apart; he’s also got a few strategic tricks up his sleeve.

Hocevar’s creative genius frequently shines in the NASCAR Cup Series. Notable performances include a remarkable 11th place finish as a substitute driver for Noah Gragson in 2023, and a personal best second-place finish in Atlanta this year. As he sets his sights on the forthcoming Homestead-Miami race, he planned to bring a secret strategy into play. However, a NASCAR insider may have blown his cover.

In the 2023 Truck playoff race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Hocevar ascended to triumph, steering his No. 23 Niece Motorsports truck into the Championship 4. His path to victory was marked by a strategic approach, as he held the lead for the last 11 laps, staving off the fierce competition from Zane Smith. He stuck to his line of control until the finish line, finishing a solid 2.705 seconds ahead of the 2022 Truck champion.

This victory was defined by Hocevar’s unique strategy. As he revealed to reporter Jeff Gluck in 2024, “I had a weird line at Homestead that I did in the trucks (in 2023), and it worked. We won the race. But nobody in the (Cup) field ran it. Everybody ran against the fence.”

However, as is the nature of NASCAR, drivers often mirror successful racing styles of their competitors. Tyler Reddick, winner of the 2024 Homestead playoff race, seemingly replicated Hocevar’s 2023 Homestead strategy. This strategy, as Gluck described, was an unconventional mid-track line, rather than sticking to the wall.

However, Gluck’s revelations might not sit well with Hocevar. The Spire Motorsports driver showed his irritation when the topic was brought up in Las Vegas. Despite his frustration, Hocevar’s racing line remains a topic of interest in the racing community.

Despite the potential compromise of his strategic edge, Hocevar remains a strong contender. His team, including Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson, is fully behind him. After all, Hocevar’s strategy is now public knowledge, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it can be executed by anyone.

The 2025 season has been filled with controversy for Hocevar, from ticking off veteran Cup Series drivers like Kyle Busch and Ross Chastain, to spinning out Ryan Blaney on lap 235. Yet, despite the criticism he’s faced, Hocevar remains unflinching in his resolve. He clinched a runner-up spot in Atlanta and maintains that his relentless approach is key to his success.

Hocevar’s determination continues to shine through, regardless of the challenges he faces. Even with his trade secrets exposed, he’s still a formidable contender for Homestead-Miami. His priority is clear: “We’re here to win races, not be a boy band and love each other, and play on the playground together.”

As the Straight Talk Wireless 400 race approaches, all eyes are on Carson Hocevar. Undeterred by the leaks, he’s ready to roll up his sleeves and surprise us once more. This weekend promises to be another exciting chapter in Hocevar’s racing journey.
