In an awe-inspiring turn of events, NASCAR’s rising star, Josh Berry, has emerged from a long journey full of hurdles to triumphantly claim his first NASCAR Cup Series win. The victory marked the 101st at the top level for the historic Wood Brothers Racing team, and the racing world, including former skeptics like Denny Hamlin, were left in awe.

The tenacity of Berry’s journey to the top is a testament to his sheer determination. Discovered a decade ago by Dale Jr. on iRacing, Berry was enlisted in the JR Motorsports Late Model program. Despite lacking the financial cushioning of corporate sponsors or the connectivity of prominent families, Berry’s steadfast resolve and relentless work ethic were his guiding forces. After two robust seasons in the Xfinity Series at JRM, he moved to the Cup Series only to witness the folding of his team at the end of 2024. Undeterred, his undying passion for motor racing finally paid off when he was signed by NASCAR’s longest-running team, Wood Brothers Racing.

The move, which saw Harrison Burton part ways with the team, was initially viewed as a gamble. However, Berry silenced the doubters with a stellar performance at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, marking his first victory in the NASCAR Cup Series. To the followers who had tracked his journey from the short tracks to the Xfinity Series and finally to the Cup Series, this win was an anticipated triumph. However, for spectators like Denny Hamlin, who had doubted the No. 21 team’s chances for a successful 2025 campaign, the victory was an unexpected revelation.

In his podcast, Hamlin acknowledged his shift in perception, stating, “He’s the real deal.” Hamlin candidly admitted to his prior skepticism of Berry, despite his breakthrough season in the Xfinity Series. He further delved into Berry’s victory, attributing it to the influence of Team Penske on Wood Brothers Racing. Despite the team’s struggles in the past, Hamlin believes their recent victories, including Berry’s, are a testament to their association with Team Penske.

The significance of Berry’s win is amplified when considering the competition he faced from drivers like Austin Dillon, Ty Dillon, Ty Gibbs, Austin Cindric, and Riley Herbst. His victory stands as a beacon of hope and motivation for aspiring racers dedicated to the craft of stock car racing. Even Hamlin, a NASCAR stalwart, has welcomed this shift in the sport’s dynamics brought about by Berry’s victorious stint in Vegas.

Reflecting on Berry’s journey, Hamlin said, “It is so refreshing and great to see a self-made cup series driver like Josh to be successful.” Hamlin saw a reflection of his own journey in Berry’s path to success. Both drivers developed their racing skills without the backing of wealthy families or major sponsors, competing in short tracks and eventually catching the eye of racing giants.

Hamlin’s emphasis on the diversity of backgrounds in NASCAR underscores the importance of talent development and support for drivers from diverse backgrounds. Berry’s journey from Dale Jr.’s Xfinity and Late Model program to Tony Stewart’s Cup team, and finally, to the legendary Wood Brothers Racing team, is a testament to this fact.

In conclusion, Josh Berry’s victorious journey from a modest racing enthusiast to a NASCAR Cup Series champion is a testament to his undeniable talent and unwavering determination. His victory has not only reshaped the perception of skeptics but has also set a new benchmark for aspiring racers aiming to make their mark in the world of NASCAR.
