Toto Wolff acusa Red Bull de imitar o design da ‘Grande Muralha’ do Mercedes W14 para o RB20.

Red Bull implemented significant changes in their car, the RB20, inspired by Mercedes in 2022-2024. Christian Horner, along with Toto Wolff, discussed the modifications made to the new challenger. Despite previous success with the RB19, Red Bull decided to adopt a more aggressive approach. The design of the RB20, especially the side pods and engine cover, resembles the abandoned concept from Mercedes used in the W14.

According to the Mercedes team boss, the RB20 shares similarities with the car designs of 2022 and 2023, which they have since moved away from. The engine cover and “Great Wall” side pods resemble the W13/W14 series, but Wolff suggests that the true secrets are hidden.

Wolff acknowledges that Red Bull has excelled in certain areas in recent years. While there may have been further developments, the initial appearance of the bodywork may not indicate a significant conceptual change. He also mentions that Red Bull chose to follow wind tunnel advice rather than relying solely on proven ideas.

Mercedes made changes to the front suspension and chassis, allowing for easier adjustments to optimize the setup for each track. Their design provides them with more freedom compared to other teams, who often have limited flexibility. This design allows Mercedes to adapt the inner end of the suspension leg according to their needs.

Initially, this move was seen as a diversionary tactic during pre-season to intimidate rival teams. The larger opening on the chassis side allows for different suspension arm configurations, resulting in unique kinematic and aerodynamic responses. Mercedes experimented with mounting the rear leg of the upper suspension arm at different heights during pre-season testing to evaluate its effectiveness.

The Mercedes W15 design offers several benefits depending on the chosen position, incorporating a multi-point mounting arrangement with anti-dive features. This arrangement can give Mercedes an advantage on circuits where other drivers are limited to less favorable setups. While it is a new arrangement for Mercedes, the company has already explored innovative suspension designs.
