In his debut as a full-time Formula 1 driver, Liam Lawson was thrown into a whirl of uncertainty as he battled with power unit issues, threatening his participation in the Australian Grand Prix qualifying session. The young Kiwi driver, who has joined the ranks of Red Bull Racing, pairing with Max Verstappen, was gearing up for a race that is as close to home as it gets for him. However, his hopes of making a mark were severely hampered by these technical glitches.
The issues with the power unit put Lawson on the back burner even before the qualifying round could commence. The situation escalated when Lawson was out on the track for the third practice session, only to be called back into the pits. He was left questioning the severity of the technical issues plaguing his RB21, which, as it turned out, were serious enough to bar him from setting a lap time.
Red Bull Racing, ahead of the qualifying session, identified the problem as a “PU or PU system problem on the air side.” The team’s mechanics were in a race against time, working tirelessly to rectify the issue. The clock was ticking, and Lawson’s car was still under the mechanics’ expert hands when qualifying was about to begin.
Red Bull Racing’s team boss, Christian Horner, confirmed to Sky F1 that Lawson would be able to participate in the qualifying session. However, he also acknowledged the uphill battle Lawson was up against, having lost a precious hour of track time at a circuit he had never driven before in any category.
Despite the tumultuous situation, Lawson remained cool as a cucumber. Horner confirmed that the young driver was entirely “chilled” and had the right mindset to kick off the session. When the qualifying session started, Lawson was able to join the line-up of cars and participate in Q1.
The power unit issue, while resolved in time for Lawson to hit the track, still had an impact on his performance. Despite Lawson making it onto the track, he could not secure a place in Q2. A stray final lap led him to abort and return to the pits, marking a rocky start to his full-time Formula 1 career.
