Marc Marquez, the reigning MotoGP champion, has made a triumphant return to the Argentine track, Termas de Rio Hondo, after a six-year hiatus. Marquez demonstrated his prowess on the track by clocking the fastest time during the opening practice sessions. This marks a significant stride for Marquez, who has not raced at Termas since his victory in 2019 due to a bout of diplopia in 2022 and a hand injury in 2023.

The track was a bit challenging due to overnight rain which left it slightly damp. Termas is notorious for its low-grip, which can be challenging even in the best conditions. However, Marquez, renowned for his mastery under low-grip conditions, was undeterred. He stood out from the pack, being the first to break into the 1m39s range and later the 1m38s range. His impressive performance left him a mere 0.026s ahead of Johann Zarco, another low-grip specialist, from LCR Honda.

Alex Marquez, Marc’s brother and another low-grip specialist, secured the third position. He was followed by past Termas luminary Franco Morbidelli and Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi. Bezzecchi, recognized for his low-grip expertise, was also expected to leverage the track, which has historically favored Aprilia.

The Yamaha team, led by Jack Miller, managed seventh place. However, Miller’s ranking could be attributed to his use of fresh tyres towards the end of the session. Maverick Vinales, representing KTM, secured the eighth position. In contrast, Marc Marquez’s Ducati teammate, Pecco Bagnaia, had a somewhat subdued start to the weekend, landing in the 16th spot.

The only incident during the session involved Trackhouse Aprilia’s Raul Fernandez, who ran off into the gravel at Turn 1. However, the ‘crash’ was by the broadest definition as Fernandez managed to lay his bike down gently, almost at a standstill, before resuming.

Marc Marquez’s return to the Argentine track and his stellar performance underscores his status as a formidable force in the MotoGP championship. His impressive start sets the stage for an exhilarating race weekend at Termas de Rio Hondo.
