Gabriele Mini Triumphs in Melbourne with First F2 Pole Position in 2025 Season Opener

The Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit at Albert Park witnessed an electrifying start to the 2025 Formula 2 season as Gabriele Mini, the ace driver from Prema Racing, snatched the pole position for the inaugural F2 Feature Race. Mini’s remarkable performance was closely trailed by Victor Martins, the ART Grand Prix star, who clinched the second spot, while Jak Crawford secured third place.

The season was kick-started by an intense Free Practice session, where the Frenchman Martins emerged as the quickest, setting the tone for the competitive F2 season ahead. However, the session also witnessed several mishaps as drivers Alex Dunne, Oliver Goethe, Arvid Lindblad, and Amaury Cordeel grappled with unforeseen incidents.

As the teams were gearing up for the Qualifying stage, the circuit was abuzz with a scandal that embroiled six drivers. Multiple grid penalties were issued for both the Sprint and Feature races, marking a tumultuous start to the season. Among those penalized were Crawford and Kush Maini from DAMS Lucas Oil, Cordeel and Dunne from Rodin Motorsport, and Trident’s duo Sami Meguetounif and Max Esterson. The teams were penalized for illegally installing an air pressure sensor to unethically measure aerodynamic loads during pre-season testing, thereby gaining an unfair advantage over other teams.

Turning the spotlight back onto the track, Martins set an impressive early pace with a 1:31.012s lap time, even as tension escalated with a collision between Goethe and Esterson at Turn 13. This collision resulted in the American-British racer losing a part of his front wing. Mini and Leonardo Fornaroli swiftly rose to the occasion, setting impressive lap times that kept Martins on edge.

The competition heated up as the provisional pole position was seized by Joshua Durksen from AIX Racing, only to be reclaimed by Martins. Crawford then upped the ante with a record lap time of 1:30.184s. Mini’s stellar performance continued with a lap time of 1:30.178s, only for Fornaroli to surge into the first place. With a little over 10 minutes remaining, Mini was trailing behind Invicta Racing’s Fornaroli, who led with a lap time of 1:29.948s. Crawford, Martins, and Verschoor completed the top five.

However, Mini wasn’t done yet. Despite setting a lap time during yellow flags in the final sector due to Kush Maini’s spin in the DAMS car, Mini turned the tables with a scorching lap time of 1:29.286s. In a nail-biting finale, Mini overtook Verschoor to seize the pole position as the session drew to a close.

As the chequered flag was waved, Fornaroli spun out, ceding the spotlight to Mini. The Italian driver, who had finished second to Fornaroli in the previous season’s Formula 3 Championship, triumphantly claimed the pole position for the first Feature Race of the season. Crawford’s third-place qualification was marred by his grid penalty, pushing him further down the starting order.

The top five was rounded off by Verschoor in fourth place and Dunne, who made a late surge to secure fifth place. The top ten included Roman Stanek from Invicta, Hitech’s Dino Beganovic, Luke Browning, Joshua Durksen, and the reigning F3 World Champion Fornaroli.

As the 2025 F2 season picks up pace, the race at Melbourne has set the stage for a thrilling showdown, with the 22 drivers vying for victory in a contest of speed, skill, and strategy.
