Max Verstappen: The Underdog Champion F1 Needs in 2025?

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - MARCH 12: Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing looks on at an Oracle Red Bull Racing event during previews ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Australia at Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit on March 12, 2025 in Melbourne, Australia. Despite predictions discounting his chances, Max Verstappen is a force to be reckoned with this Formula 1 season, according to insiders. Betting pundits are casting doubts on Verstappen’s chances of mirroring Michael Schumacher’s historic fifth consecutive championship win in 2004. They also seem skeptical about Red Bull’s chances of securing the Constructors’ crown this year. Should these predictions hold true, Verstappen could face the first year without any end-of-year accolades since 2020.

However, those acquainted with Verstappen’s sheer determination and racing prowess are not so quick to dismiss him. There is a general consensus that the upcoming F1 2025 championship could be an open race, as evidenced by the recent testing in Bahrain. Martin Brundle, a seasoned F1 commentator, names Verstappen as his favourite, citing potential point losses by the competing McLaren and Ferrari teams.

Sky Sports F1 strategy expert, Bernie Collins, also weighs in on the conversation. She acknowledges the two possible outcomes for Verstappen’s season but emphasizes his formidable abilities. “Even if his car is not the fastest, he will still be a force to be reckoned with,” she asserts, speaking to PlanetF1.com.

Collins highlights Verstappen’s competitive spirit and his drive to win, saying that the Dutch prodigy will go to great lengths to extract the best performance from his car. However, she also notes that if Verstappen feels Red Bull won’t be able to enhance the car’s performance, he may struggle.

In a thought-provoking observation, Collins suggests that Verstappen, who boasts 53 race wins and 37 poles in his last 89 starts, might enjoy the challenge of winning without the fastest car. This idea aligns with Verstappen’s character, she notes, adding that he’d bask in the glory of winning the championship despite having the third-fastest car. She also commends Verstappen’s maturity and change in mentality over the years.

Verstappen is the undisputed number one driver in his team, with Liam Lawson taking the second seat. Collins anticipates the driver pairings to be one of the fascinating aspects of the year, wondering how the dynamics within the teams will play out.

Zak Brown, CEO of Constructors’ champions McLaren, seems enthusiastic about having two title contenders in his team. Speaking to BBC Radio 4, Brown admitted the challenges this setup might present, but affirmed his team’s readiness to face them. He noted McLaren’s fair treatment of their drivers and their commitment to letting them race, a philosophy that received criticism last year.

As we approach the new season, Oscar Piastri has signed a contract extension with McLaren, reinforcing their strong driver lineup for the foreseeable future. With these developments, the upcoming season promises an exciting race and potential surprises. In the face of predictions and expectations, one thing remains certain – Max Verstappen will be a significant player in the forthcoming championship.
