NASCAR rumor mill ignites: Could Carl Edwards make a shocking Daytona 500 comeback?

NASCAR legend Carl Edwards, known for his signature backflips celebrating his victories, retired abruptly after the 2016 season, leaving a void in victory lanes across America. Almost a decade later, Edwards is set to make a triumphant return. However, fans won’t be seeing him behind the wheel, but rather behind a microphone.

Amazon Prime Video, which is already graced by the likes of Adam Alexander, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Steve Letarte commentating five races, has now unveiled the final component of their NASCAR squad. The Hall of Famer Edwards is joined by Trevor Bayne, Kim Coon, and Marty Snider, all set to cover the NASCAR Cup Series for 2025. This star-studded team is set to debut during the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 25.

In addition to this exciting lineup, the announcement revealed that Corey LaJoie, former Spire Motorsports driver, will team up with Edwards and Danielle Trotta to provide analysis for pre and post-race studio shows. Alex Strand, Sr. coordinating producer at Prime Video, expressed his excitement, stating, “Carl’s Hall-of-Fame career, combined with the extensive experience of Trevor, Kim, and Marty, brings an unparalleled authenticity to our coverage. Their deep knowledge and genuine passion will resonate with fans and elevate the NASCAR viewing experience.”

While Edwards’ departure from his racing career in 2016 wasn’t the most glamorous, his hiatus from the sport wasn’t well-received by the NASCAR community. However, his Hall of Fame recognition and newfound role in the broadcast booth seem to have mended fences with the racing community.

The return of Edwards has stirred a wave of excitement among fans. Despite the heartbreak of 2016, Edwards, a former Roush Fenway Racing driver, was twice on the cusp of NASCAR championship glory. He was edged out in 2008 by Jimmie Johnson and in 2011 by Tony Stewart in a tiebreaker.

Edwards’ return has been well received, with fans expressing widespread approval of Prime Video’s strategic acquisition. Edwards’ insights, backed by his 72 wins across the three national series, including prestigious races like the Coca-Cola 600 and the Southern 500, ensure he’s well equipped to provide stellar commentary. Comparisons have been drawn between Edwards and Kevin Harvick, who has been a hit in the FOX booth post-retirement.

In a cheeky twist, some fans have taken the opportunity to poke fun at FOX over their broadcast errors, with particular reference to their coverage of the COTA race. Amid the excitement around Edwards’ return, one fan humorously asked, “Will he backflip if he picks the race winner?” A nod to Edwards’ spectacular post-race celebration, this question highlights the affection fans still hold for the veteran racer.

Prime Video’s NASCAR schedule commences with the Coca-Cola 600 from Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 25. This will be followed by four more exclusive races concluding on June 22. The lineup includes races at Nashville Superspeedway, Michigan International Speedway, Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, and Pocono Raceway.

With the inclusion of Dale Jr., Carl Edwards, and Steve Letarte, Prime Video has pulled out all the stops to ensure a positive debut in NASCAR broadcasting. It’s safe to say that NASCAR fans are in for a treat with their new broadcasting partners.
