George Russell destaca uma questão de segurança crucial para a Fórmula 1.

George Russell states that Formula 1 still has a long way to go to ensure the safety of the drivers in a crucial area. The sport puts enormous pressure on the bodies of the drivers, as seen in the extreme heat of the 2023 season. This has not only affected the cars, but also presented challenges for the drivers themselves. Russell openly criticized Formula 1 for its inadequate efforts in dealing with the issues faced at the Lusail Circuit. He had previously highlighted the risks associated with the ban on tire blankets in the sport.

To address concerns related to heat, the FIA allowed the use of new cooling ducts near the driver’s cockpit. This allowed for better airflow and helped keep the drivers cool. Russell recalled the high temperatures experienced during the previous year’s Qatar GP, reaching 40 degrees. Additionally, the horrific accident at the Bahrain GP led to an increase in the thickness of the racing suits to improve fire resistance. However, this resulted in higher body temperatures for the drivers during races.

The drivers’ body temperatures reaching nearly 40 degrees indicated that they were on the verge of needing hospitalization after the race. Russell himself had to retire from a race last year due to feeling unwell on the circuit. He emphasized that the measures taken so far were only a “very small step” and were not sufficient to ensure maximum safety for the drivers.

George Russell expressed optimism regarding the progress and performance of the Mercedes challenger, the W15. He stated that the W15 provided a more enjoyable driving experience compared to its predecessor, the W14. As a result, the Brackley team is hopeful of achieving excellent results throughout the season, alongside Russell and his teammate.

Instead of seeking a perfect setup with the car during testing, Russell clarified that the team’s goal was to maximize mileage for learning and development throughout the season. He emphasized that the car felt much better to drive. However, he also acknowledged that the speed of the car was more important than its overall feel.

Brackley will do their utmost to support Lewis Hamilton in finishing the season strong and potentially challenging for the championship. However, the impressive pace and performance demonstrated by Red Bull during testing have instilled fear among rival teams on the grid. The seven-time world champion himself accepted that Red Bull is likely to emerge as the winners in the season-opening race in Bahrain.
