Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has confirmed that veteran Japanese driver, Takuma Sato, will be vying for a spot in the 109th Indianapolis 500, marking his 16th attempt at the world-renowned race. Sato has been a steadfast participant in this iconic event since 2010, even as he has gradually taken a step back from his full-time IndyCar career.

In his statement, Sato expressed his elation at the opportunity to compete once more in the Indy 500 under the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing banner. He extended his gratitude to team leaders Bobby Rahal, Mike Lanigan, and David Letterman, as well as the entire organization, for providing him this thrilling chance. He also acknowledged the unwavering support of his primary sponsor, AMADA, alongside other sponsors including Panasonic Automotive Systems, Niterra, Deloitte Tohmatsu, NAC, Honda, and HRC.

Sato will be driving RLL’s #75 entry again this year, sporting a dynamic new livery that retains the team’s historic design. He described the refreshed look of the car as “absolutely stunning”. He also highlighted the excitement of reuniting with the team and the significance of having more familiar faces on board this year, contributing to his confidence in the upcoming challenge.

The 48-year-old driver has previously tasted victory in the Indy 500 twice – his first win came in 2017 with Andretti Autosport, followed by another triumph in 2020 while racing for RLL. This year’s competition will mark his seventh race with RLL, a testament to his enduring partnership with the team.

Fans can expect Sato’s car to bear a striking resemblance to the previous year’s design. With backing from Amada America, Sato drove his car to a respectable 14th place finish last year.

Sato’s entry pushes the tally of confirmed entries for this year’s Indy 500 to 34, setting the stage for another round of nail-biting qualifying bumping. This process, which will see one driver being eliminated without getting to start the race, adds an extra layer of suspense to the qualifying weekend.

The 109th edition of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for May 25, with FOX providing television coverage. As Sato gears up for his 16th Indy 500, racing enthusiasts and supporters await another thrilling spectacle on the motorsport circuit.
