Max Verstappen, reigning Formula 1 World Champion, has sparked controversy by publicly criticizing the portrayal of himself and others in Netflix’s widely-watched docuseries, Drive To Survive. His comments come after the depiction of his reaction to the defeat at the Miami Grand Prix last season, which Verstappen derided as misleading.
Drive To Survive, a behind-the-scenes look at the high-octane world of Formula 1 racing, has just launched its seventh season. It has previously come under fire for alleged distortion and dramatization of specific moments within the sport. Verstappen’s recent comments add fuel to this ongoing debate.
In the second episode of the recent season, footage depicts Lando Norris, the victor of the race, sharing the joy of his triumph with his team and family. The scene then abruptly switches to a seemingly dejected Verstappen, leading former F1 champion Jenson Button to comment that the Dutch racer “would be in a bad place right now”.
Verstappen, however, struck back at this portrayal during a recent Twitch stream. He derided the suggestion that he was upset, stating, “Apparently I was very sad after Miami…I literally had the best time ever Sunday night, so I don’t know what I was upset about. Probably better not say anything.”
The Dutch racing star has been vocal about his issues with Drive To Survive, accusing the series of creating unnecessary drama. Despite acknowledging the series’ importance to Formula 1 in 2023, he expressed concern over the portrayal of many individuals, citing it as the reason for his reluctance to participate in the interview segments of the show.
Verstappen has recently reemphasized this stance, remarking on The Project, “You don’t really see a lot of me in Drive to Survive because I don’t like doing it. So yeah, you probably don’t get the right side of me because it’s just an interview. I’m just sitting down in a dark room, and I hate that!”
The reigning champion also raised objections to the depiction of the relationship between Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, former team-mates at McLaren. Verstappen dismissed the suggestion of a tension-filled relationship between the two, calling out the series for “faking rivalries.”
This ongoing controversy surrounding Netflix’s Drive To Survive series highlights the struggle between the need for engaging content and the accurate portrayal of reality, a conundrum that is not unfamiliar in the realm of documentary filmmaking. It remains to be seen how this criticism will impact the future production of the series.
