When veteran NASCAR driver Kyle Busch announced he was moving to Richard Childress Racing (RCR) in 2023, the team had high hopes for his performance. Busch, who arrived at RCR with 60 Cup race victories and two championship titles, was expected to be a valuable asset. However, despite a promising start, his stint at RCR has been a tale of diminishing returns, culminating in a frustrating 2024 season that put an end to his 19-year winning streak.
Busch’s underperformance at RCR has led to speculation about his future with the team. As he enters the final year of his contract, recent improvements at Phoenix have offered a glimmer of hope in an otherwise gloomy scenario. Busch recently shed light on the team’s upgrades and their potential to secure victories.
Before the commencement of the 2025 season, Busch’s stint with RCR seemed to be stagnating, marred by a lack of victories. RCR, responding to the slump, committed to providing Busch with the best car possible. Austin Dillon, Busch’s teammate and grandson of RCR owner Richard Childress, acknowledged their efforts, saying, “We try and give maximum effort every weekend, put him in the best position we can.”
In a post-Phoenix race interview, Busch praised the improvements made to the #8 Chevrolet from the previous season. He added that another similar upgrade could make them serious contenders for victory. However, Busch also candidly admitted that the car still fell short of his expectations.
Busch, who has shown dominance at Phoenix Raceway in the past, has struggled since his switch to RCR. His performance at Phoenix with RCR includes just two top-10 finishes in five races, which is a far cry from his winning form at the raceway during his time with Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports.
Busch’s 2025 season started on a rocky note, with a Did Not Finish (DNF) at Daytona. However, he managed to finish 7th at Atlanta and 5th at COTA, despite a late caution. At Phoenix, he finished 8th, hinting at a gradual improvement in form. Yet, the pressure of his 61 race winless streak continues to loom large.
The success of RCR’s car improvements will be pivotal in determining Busch’s future with the team. Crew chief Randall Burnett has been fine-tuning the No. 8 Chevrolet, which has earned 3 wins, 15 top-five, and 27 top-10 finishes in 72 races. Despite these improvements, Busch emphasises the need for more progress to consistently compete for victories.
As Busch’s contract reaches its end, RCR, backed by Bank OZK’s sponsorship, is under pressure to meet his expectations and secure a contract extension. All eyes are on Busch to see if he can find his way back to Victory Lane and validate RCR’s efforts.
Next up on NASCAR’s calendar is the Pennzoil 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Busch’s record at the track is impressive, but he has only managed one top-10 finish with RCR. Despite not having a win yet in 2025, Busch has the potential to turn things around at Vegas. A strong performance at the upcoming race could position him as a contender for the championship, something that he will undoubtedly be aiming for.
Will Busch be able to end his winless streak at Las Vegas, or will he move on to Homestead with 62 winless races under his belt? Only time will tell.
