Goodyear’s New Tire Experiment Sparks Controversy: Will it Revive or Ruin NASCAR’s COTA Race?

The NASCAR Next Gen tire was a two-year development process that consisted of close collaboration with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), NASCAR, race teams and drivers, undergoing tests at over 25 tracks, from superspeedways to short tracks and road courses. The recent debate around Goodyear’s innovative option tires, which have garnered both praise and skepticism from drivers and fans alike, has been put to rest. Showcasing their potential on the racing tracks at Phoenix, these tires have redefined the dynamics of NASCAR. Despite mixed reactions since their debut at Richmond and North Wilkesboro, Goodyear stands firm in its commitment to this game-changing approach.

Team Penske’s Joey Logano, who led 81 laps and finished 13th at the Phoenix race, voiced his support for the new tires, stating they’re a positive development for the sport. Conversely, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell, who led a staggering 105 laps and emerged victorious in the race, expressed reservations about the option tire making non-competitive cars competitive through different strategies. Despite their contrasting views, both drivers demonstrated impressive performance using the new tires.

The Phoenix race served as a pivotal trial for these innovative tires, and Goodyear has been prompt in responding to the NASCAR community. In the face of initial hesitations among drivers, the Phoenix race showcased the potential of the option tires.

Mark Keto, Goodyear’s NASCAR Project Manager, observed that, although the option tires wore out quicker due to increased grip, strategic management helped teams extend the tires’ life and secure better track positions. Keto further noted that the strategic element introduced by these tires added depth to the race. The drivers, including Ryan Preece and Joey Logano, who managed to stretch his option tires to 59 laps, successfully navigated through slower traffic, demonstrating the tires’ potential.

“Everything went according to plan at Phoenix, and the Option tire worked very well,” Keto stated, emphasizing how the tire allowed teams to vary their strategies and achieve better track positions over those using Prime tires. The positive performance of the option tire at Phoenix and its potential implications for the championship race could encourage NASCAR to make it the primary tire for the October event, as suggested by NASCAR insider Jeff Gluck.

Goodyear’s partnership with NASCAR dates back to 1954, marking one of the longest collaborations in racing history, and has been instrumental in shaping NASCAR’s success. In 1997, Goodyear became the sole tire supplier for NASCAR, a move that brought stability and fostered innovation within the sport, including the introduction of rain tires for road courses and short tracks.

Today, Goodyear continues to push the boundaries of performance and innovation in collaboration with NASCAR, producing over 100,000 hand-built tires annually. The successful trial of the option tire at Phoenix is a testament to their enduring partnership and commitment to driving NASCAR forward, promising a future brimming with innovation and high-performance racing. With a new multi-year agreement signed in 2022, this partnership is set to continue shaping the course of NASCAR, reaffirming Goodyear’s commitment to the sport.
