Ty Gibbs Under Fire: Fans and Critics Question His Future in Cup Racing After Phoenix Raceway Pileup

The high-octane racing event at Phoenix Raceway was overshadowed by a catastrophic seven-car pileup, with young Joe Gibbs Racing driver, Ty Gibbs, at the epicenter of the controversy. The incident, which saw Katherine Legge spin on the opening lap before Gibbs’ mishap at lap 99, resulted in several drivers, including Carson Hocevar, Riley Herbst, Justin Haley, and Chase Briscoe, bowing out of the race.

The collision, a result of a four-wide exit on the second turn, was a disaster waiting to happen on the notoriously tight Phoenix track. However, the bulk of the blame was directed at Ty Gibbs, with racing enthusiasts and critics alike voicing their disapproval on social media. “Ty Gibbs… what a class act, man. Grandpa sure has a lot of blind spots when it comes to having this clown drive for JGR,” read one sarcastic jab online. Another user was blunt in their assessment: “Ty Gibbs is not Cup material. Sorry.”

Even Dirty Mo Media, the popular motorsport media outlet, was quick to highlight the unfortunate incident on their platform. Their invitation to followers to express their views on the pileup incited a flurry of reactions.

The 22-year-old driver’s performance has been under the scanner, sparking debates around sports nepotism. Critics argue that his racing seat is a result of his grandfather’s influence rather than his own merit. One keen observer noted, “Ty Gibbs has gone nowhere since the start of the race and runs 34th. Only two seconds from being lapped.”

In the midst of the chaos, William Byron celebrated his stage one victory after starting from pole position. Joey Logano, on the other hand, faced setbacks due to a restart violation that forced his team to switch to option tires. As the dust settles on the dramatic Phoenix race, the debate surrounding Ty Gibbs’ future in Cup racing continues to intensify.

This incident has necessitated an urgent reassessment of Ty Gibbs’ position in Joe Gibbs Racing, with fans and critics alike questioning the role of nepotism in his appointment. As the storm of controversy rages on, it remains to be seen how this will impact the future of the young driver and the reputation of Joe Gibbs Racing.
