Formula 1, a sport synonymous with speed, innovation, and continuous evolution, may well be on the cusp of a significant shift. The winds of change are being fanned by none other than the FIA president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who recently ignited conversations about a potential return to the revered V10 engines. Adding to the chorus of approval is seven-time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, who threw his weight behind the idea during a recent Ferrari event in Milan.

Ben Sulayem’s proposition is to reinstate the crowd-pleasing V10 engines, but with a twist: powering them with sustainable fuels. This comes in alignment with the sweeping regulation overhaul planned for 2026, which includes a pivotal shift in engine regulations. Formula 1, in its commitment to sustainability, is set to transition to 100% renewable fuels. This ambitious move is part of the sport’s drive to hit net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Furthermore, a balance between traditional engine power and electric propulsion is also on the cards. The FIA’s blueprint includes a near 50/50 split in power output between the engine and the MGU-K electric motor, marking another milestone towards a more sustainable future for the sport.

The notion of reviving the V10 engines, last used in 2005, has also garnered support from Christian Horner, the Red Bull Team Principal. Horner nostalgically expressed his desire to return to the “sound of grand prix racing” that the V10 engines provided. Hamilton echoed his sentiment, stating, “I hope that in 20 years we’ll have great races and we’ll have cars that sound good.” He further added, “I certainly hope it’s not completely electric, but sustainable with V10 or V12 engines, with a zero carbon footprint or something like that.”

The FIA has responded to these discussions with a commitment to investigate the feasibility of a V10 comeback. Reports suggest that a dedicated working group is being formed to delve deeper into the concept. The governing body stated, “We are engaged in discussions with a number of stakeholders to determine the future technical direction of F1 beyond the 2026 regulatory cycle.”

While there has been no official confirmation from the FIA, the buzz surrounding the revival of V10 engines continues to grow. With influential figures like Hamilton endorsing the idea, the prospects of a V10 revival appear to be gaining momentum. As the world of Formula 1 continues to evolve, fans eagerly await the final decision, marking another chapter in the thrilling saga of this high-octane sport.
