Phoenix Raceway, a one-mile tri-oval in Avondale, Arizona, has been a cornerstone of NASCAR’s Cup Series since 1988, witnessing thrilling finishes and record-breaking performances. But there’s one name that resonates louder than others in Phoenix’s rich racing history – Kevin Harvick. This NASCAR legend’s legacy at Phoenix is unrivalled, with his record-setting performances leaving an indelible mark on the racetrack.

Harvick, known affectionately as the ‘King of Phoenix’, holds an unmatched record at Phoenix Raceway, with nine victories across 42 starts. His dominance began in 2006, and he made his mark with a unique mastery of the track’s eccentric turns and unconventional dogleg. His reign did not wane. From 2014 to 2016, Harvick claimed three consecutive wins with Stewart-Haas Racing, demonstrating championship-worthy performances.

Even in his second retirement year in 2025, Harvick’s legacy remains potent. His final race saw him steer the No. 4 Busch Light Ford to a respectable seventh place, a fitting farewell to an illustrious career. His Next Gen stats (starting from 2022) reveal his consistency; in four races, he achieved two top-5s, two top-10s, and a commendable 5.8 average finish. Throughout his career at Phoenix, Harvick maintained an average of 8.5, with 20 top-5s, 31 top-10s, and an impressive 5.27 average running position.

Harvick’s secret to success was his strategic approach to the races. He would maintain a loose setup in the early stages of the race to gain an advantage as the track conditions evolved. This strategy, coupled with his inherent talent, made him a relentless adversary at Phoenix.

Other NASCAR legends, such as Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt, Kyle Busch, and Denny Hamlin have also graced the winner’s podium at Phoenix. Their victories contribute to the thrilling history of Phoenix Raceway, which continues to evolve with each racing season.

Harvick’s legacy is not confined to his racing achievements. His influence extends to the younger generation of racers, including his son, Keelan Harvick. Interestingly, it was Keelan, not Kevin, who inspired NASCAR’s rising star, Connor Zilisch.

Kevin Harvick, the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion turned broadcaster, recently shed light on this intriguing aspect during his Happy Hour podcast. He downplayed his role in Zilisch’s career, crediting his son Keelan for steering the young racer’s trajectory.

Zilisch, an 18-year-old NASCAR Xfinity Series driver for JR Motorsports, has often acknowledged Keelan for kindling his passion for stock car racing. The two competed against each other during their karting days, and Keelan’s transition to stock car racing was a key influence on Zilisch’s career choice. Following a successful karting career, which included a victory in a 163-driver race in Italy, Zilisch made his move to NASCAR, culminating in a debut Xfinity Series win at Watkins Glen in 2024.

Inspired by Harvick’s legacy at Phoenix, Zilisch aspires to emulate the veteran’s dominance on the racetrack. The rich tapestry of Phoenix Raceway’s history continues to inspire the next generation of NASCAR drivers, and Kevin Harvick’s legacy looms large as one of the most formidable racing legends of the sport.
