Audi has lost ground to Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the large SUV segment. Mercedes-Benz was the first to enter this class in the mid-2000s with the original GL. The second generation followed in 2012, with a rebranding as GLS for the mid-cycle update, and now it is in its third generation. BMW also offers a rival to the GLS in the form of the X7, but Audi did not have a car in this category, a failure that it will fill with the launch of the Q9.
As a long-awaited model, the Audi Q9 is in the development testing phase. The model to position in the range of the four rings above the Q7, assuming the role of flagship, will use common platforms and powertrains, wrapped in an instantly recognizable package and equipped with the latest technological equipment, comfort features, and safety systems from the manufacturer.
Split headlights dominate the style
More and more manufacturers, especially premium ones, have opted for split headlights in certain models. The next Audi Q9 follows this route as well, and while we don’t necessarily think it’s a good idea, at least this high-standing vehicle looks somewhat elegant with the slim DRLs positioned above the main light units. It also has a large grille, although not as large as some of the company’s past and present models, and a wide air intake on the bumper with a honeycomb pattern.
Space for the whole family
The Audi Q7 has always been slightly larger than its rivals BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE, thus stepping into the upper segment line. As a result, it is safe to assume that the Q9 will significantly improve this aspect. It will have a spacious second row and a third row of seats behind it, although this last one may be more suitable for children.
Even though it won’t be long until Audi introduces the Q9, exact details about the construction and engine lineup are still to be revealed. However, several media outlets mention an upgraded variant of the MLB platform, the same one that will support the next Audi A5 (successor to the current A4). It is expected that the engineers from Ingolstadt will pay extra attention to chassis tuning, as we believe this model will be one of the most comfortable in the segment.
