In the high-stakes world of MotoGP, Marc Marquez has been likened to the legendary Valentino Rossi, due to his ability to “manipulate” teams to serve his interests, according to TNT Sports pundit Neil Hodgson. Marquez’s debut victories in both races for the factory Ducati team at the Thai Grand Prix season opener, where he finished over two seconds ahead of teammate Francesco Bagnaia, indicate a potential shift in dynamics within the team.
The 2025 title race, which was initially expected to be a head-to-head clash between the two teammates, might now hinge on who can rally the most support within the team. Hodgson points out that this is where Marquez’s skills could come into play, similar to Rossi’s past influence.
“Many perceive Marquez as arrogant due to his on-track demeanor,” Hodgson said, adding, “But he is actually a team player who has a knack for rallying his team around him.” Despite the harsh undertones, Hodgson insists that such manipulation is part of the job, and credits Marquez as a master of this art. He further notes that the only other rider who could match or even surpass Marquez’s prowess in this regard is Rossi.
Marquez’s impressive debut performance has already turned heads among Ducati’s top brass. He joined the team on the back of Bagnaia’s dominant campaign last season, where he secured 11 victories on the GP24. But Marquez’s ability to win favor within the team could potentially upset Bagnaia’s standing. “Marquez is no rookie. He knows how to play the press and the garage,” Hodgson continued.
He lauded Marquez’s talent for winning over the team, as evidenced during his stints at Gresini and Honda. Now, Hodgson believes Marquez faces the ultimate challenge of transforming Bagnaia’s supportive garage into a Marc Marquez stronghold.
Bagnaia, who secured Ducati’s first MotoGP title since Casey Stoner in 2007, is much loved at Ducati. However, Hodgson insists that the brand has a strong affinity for winners, hinting at a possible shift in the team dynamics.
Hodgson’s TNT Sports co-pundit, Michael Laverty, agreed, pointing out that Marquez appears confident now that he is working with the best engineers in the paddock. “He’s got the best resources at his disposal now, and it shows in his confidence and swagger,” Laverty said.
With Marquez’s debut performance already turning heads and his ability to draw team support, the 2025 MotoGP title race promises to be a thrilling spectacle. As the season progresses, it remains to be seen how Marquez’s influence within the team will shape the championship’s outcome.
