Yuki Tsunoda, the Japanese F1 driver, is at a crucial juncture in his career. As he gears up for his fifth season with Red Bull’s affiliate team, now named Racing Bulls, his future within the F1 sector appears uncertain. This comes as Honda, his sponsor, professes that there is little more they can do to further his career.

Tsunoda had hoped that outperforming the seasoned Daniel Ricciardo and a maiden appearance in Red Bull’s post-season test would secure him an upgrade. However, his recent exclusion has led Red Bull’s Christian Horner to consider letting him go, with rising talent Arvid Lindblad waiting in the wings.

The onus is now on Tsunoda to prove himself against rookie teammate Isack Hadjar in the forthcoming season. As Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko pointed out, Tsunoda is the one controlling his fate. His performance in the upcoming season will be a turning point in his career.

The decision to replace Sergio Perez with Liam Lawson left Tsunoda on the sidelines, despite his superior performance in their six-race stint as teammates. The key determinant was Lawson’s psychological durability, which was deemed superior to Tsunoda’s emotional regulation.

In the event that Tsunoda parts ways with Red Bull, there are rumors of a potential move to Aston Martin, given the team’s upcoming engine collaboration with Honda from 2026. However, Honda’s support for Tsunoda, while dating back to his pre-F1 days, isn’t as robust as it used to be.

Honda Racing Corporation President, Koji Watanabe, emphasized Tsunoda’s need to take charge of his career. This aligns with the recent development that Tsunoda has changed his management team. Watanabe stressed that drivers cannot perpetually rely on Honda, and Tsunoda, being in his fifth year, needs to start making decisions for himself.

As the 2025 Formula 1 season approaches, it is clear that Yuki Tsunoda is at a crucial crossroads. How he performs this year will significantly determine his future in the sport. The pressure is on, and it is now up to Tsunoda to steer his career in the right direction.
