The racing world is abuzz with excitement as Christopher Bell, the driver of the #20 car, looks set to shatter Roger Penske’s long-held monopoly at the Phoenix Raceway. After claiming his first victory of 2024 at Phoenix, Bell is poised for another win, proving he is a force to be reckoned with. A few months back, an unfortunate brake rotor explosion halted his championship dreams, but Bell has shown his resilience, leading over 50 laps in March 2024.

Phoenix, a long-established stronghold for Penske, is now under threat. Bell, with a vengeance-fuelled drive, is ready to challenge Penske’s dominance. The race at Phoenix isn’t merely about a win; it’s about demonstrating who has the mettle to claim the Championship Race on the same track later in the year.

Bell’s triumph at Phoenix last year was no fluke but the result of tireless efforts. As the #20 driver himself put it, “Just a credit to (crew chief) Adam (Stevens), man. Adam, my engineers… all the mechanics on this thing.” With a supportive team and a top-notch car, Bell is already hitting the ground running in 2025.

Bell’s performance in the 2025 season has been impressive, marked by wins and top finishes. His #20 Toyota is matching Penske’s speed, and Bell knows this success has the potential to last. “It’s time to start putting it all together,” he said, underlining his commitment to achieving the highest standards for himself and his team.

Bell’s record at Phoenix is impressive, with one win, two top-5s, and four top-10s in nine Cup Series starts. His average finish of 9.9 is better than Joey Logano’s 11.8 and Ryan Blaney’s 14.0 over the same period. After his victory, Bell acknowledged that the Phoenix track has always been a comfortable one for him, but the big question remains: Can he take down the Penske Phoenix machine?

Penske’s dominance at Phoenix is clear from the statistics. Since 2004, the team has accumulated 13 wins, 49 top-10s, and a 92.3% finish rate across 52 races. Logano has three victories and a 12.2 average finish, while Blaney has two wins and a 14.6 average. However, Penske’s recent performances have been less than stellar, especially in the Spring Phoenix Race.

The last Spring Phoenix Race victory for a Penske driver was not during their title dominance period. In fact, their last Spring win was in 2020 when Logano led 60 laps to victory. Now, with Bell’s winning streak, even Kevin Harvick, the 2014 champ turned FOX broadcaster, is backing Bell to challenge Penske’s reign.

Harvick, the driver with the highest number of victories at Phoenix, recognizes Bell’s potential. He emphasized the importance of this race in understanding one’s position for the championship race. Bell’s potential is so strong that FOX Sports listed him as having the best odds to win the race.

Bell, with already two wins under his belt, is on course to match a record held by some of NASCAR’s greatest drivers. If he manages to win at Phoenix and Las Vegas, he will be the ninth driver in 60 years to record four consecutive wins. Previous holders of this record include legends like Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt Sr., Harry Gant, Bill Elliott, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson. Notably, five of these drivers won championships in the year they set this record.

Bell is fully aware of the history he could make and is taking a cautious approach. “I think it’s a testament to this team. They have no weaknesses. We can win at any race track at any time… I feel like we may have a ride. I don’t want to speak too early, but doing good so far.” The racing world is eagerly waiting to see if Bell will indeed be the key to breaking Roger Penske’s Phoenix monopoly.
