The 2004 NASCAR Cup Series Champion, Kurt Busch, is gearing up for a triumphant return to motor racing, joining Team USA colleague Travis Pastrana for the 2025 Race of Champions. The event, taking place on March 7-8, will be held within the walls of the Accor Stadium in Sydney, Australia.

Busch’s illustrious NASCAR career was abruptly put on hold in 2023 following a severe concussion he sustained during a qualifying round at Pocono in the summer of 2022. However, after an extended period of medical recovery, he has been granted clearance to return to the track, a development that has seen the racing legend rekindle his passion for the sport.

Busch shared his excitement about preparing for the Race of Champions, “It has been incredible over the last few months. Fredrik Johnsson, the main orchestrator of the Race of Champions, reached out, and once I had all my affairs sorted to confirm my participation, it felt as if a huge weight had been lifted. The process of reconnecting with the racing community has been nothing short of incredible.”

He further shared his experiences of getting back into the driver’s seat, making phone calls to suppliers like Alpinestars to update his safety gear, and hitting the tracks in Arizona and North Carolina for practice sessions. He also mentioned the support he received from his friends, including former IndyCar racer Paul Tracy, and his time spent at the Radford Racing School in Chandler, Arizona, where he honed his road racing skills in the 1990s.

Busch is particularly thrilled to join forces with action sports icon and friend, Travis Pastrana, for the Race of Champions. Pastrana, a former supercross and motocross champion and multi-time X Games gold medalist, is regarded by many as one of the most accomplished action sports athletes of all time, second only to the legendary Evel Knievel.

Busch and Pastrana have a shared history in motorsports, and their camaraderie and mutual respect will undoubtedly be a significant asset in the upcoming race. As they prepare to compete together, they are drawing on their past experiences, focusing on what worked, what didn’t, and how they can leverage this knowledge to secure the coveted trophy in 2025.

The Race of Champions, held on tarmac, will see a variety of cars and different styles of driving. Busch is confident about their chances, stating, “With my asphalt experience, different style cars, rear wheel, all wheel, front engine, rear engine, sequential gearboxes, I feel like Travis and I have every box checked, and we’re going into this with our eyes wide open and not intimidated by the situation.”

Busch, who has previously secured a second-place trophy in the Nations Cup, is eager to improve on this and bring home the overall win. He emphasized the importance of not getting caught up in the competition, focusing instead on oneself, the car, and the track.

The Race of Champions, he noted, is not about who you’re going up against, but rather about being the best you can be. He is looking forward to the energy of the stadium, the camaraderie of the paddock, and the enjoyment of the event.

Despite not racing at the full Cup Series level or competing in the NASCAR at Circuit of the Americas in Austin this weekend, Busch is thrilled to be heading to Australia to compete with the best of the best in the Race of Champions. This marks an exciting new chapter in his motorsport journey, and his fans are undoubtedly eager to see him back in action.
